David Surkamp & Pavlov’s Dog

David Surkamp (1952–2026) was the lead singer, guitarist, and principal songwriter of Pavlov’s Dog, the St. Louis progressive rock band known for blending rock, classical, and folk influences. His unmistakable voice connected with generations of listeners around the world.

Pampered Menial and the early years

Emerging from St. Louis in the early 1970s, Pavlov’s Dog signed with ABC Records. Their debut, Pampered Menial (1975), paired David’s soaring vocals with violin and Mellotron. Songs including “Julia,” “Late November,” and “Of Once and Future Kings” helped establish a lasting international following. At the Sound of the Bell followed in 1976.

Hi-Fi, solo work, and a return to the stage

David later moved to Seattle and joined Iain Matthews in Hi-Fi. He continued exploring his musical voice through collaborations and solo work, including Dancing on the Edge of a Teacup. Pavlov’s Dog returned with Lost in America (1990) and a thirtieth-anniversary reunion in St. Louis. Performances with his wife Sara Surkamp and violinist Abbie Steiling helped shape a new chapter on stages across Europe.

A progressive rock legacy

Later recordings included Echo & Boo, Prodigal Dreamer, and the concert albums Live and Unleashed and House Broken. In 2025, Pavlov’s Dog released Wonderlust, fifty years after Pampered Menial.
